You can book a same-day MOT test, but it’s not always possible for a garage to fit you in at the last minute. We’d recommend you book your MOT test as far in advance as you can, so you don’t get any last-minute stress, and you keep your car safe and on the road.
Can I get my MOT on a Sunday?
That totally depends on the garage! Not all garages are open 7 days a week, but you can use the PayByPhone app to check which ones near you are open over the weekend. Some Kwik Fit garages are open 7 days a week, but it’s best to check when you book.
Does my electric vehicle (EV) need an MOT?
Yes, all electric vehicles need to follow the same rules as petrol or diesel car. EVs need to get an MOT test after three years of registration, then every year after that.

When’s the best time to book an MOT?
You should book your test within a month of its expiry date minus one day to keep the same renewal date each year. For example, if your MOT expires on the 25th March, you can book your test from 26th February to keep the same date for next year. Booking in advance can also help you get the garage spot you want and avoid last minute stresses!
Can I cancel my MOT booking on PayByPhone?
Yes! You can cancel your test for free right up until your booking time and get a full refund. You’ll get a full refund if you cancel your booking any time before your appointment. If you cancel after the booking time or do not attend, you’ll be charged a £25 cancellation fee.
What is the penalty for driving without an MOT?
Driving without a valid MOT certificate can result in significant penalties in the UK: 1. Fines: You can be fined up to £1,000. 2. Insurance Issues: Your vehicle insurance may be invalidated, which means you might not be covered in the event of an accident. 3. Prosecution: You can be prosecuted if caught driving a vehicle without a valid MOT. You can drive to a pre-booked MOT test or a garage for repairs following a failed MOT. But you need to be able to prove that these bookings exist 4. Road Tax: You cannot renew your road tax without a valid MOT.
